Charles Barker had $5 in his savings account when he went to work for Colonial Chevrolet, though his former boss liked to say it was $7 in his pocket. Either way, Barker, like many others in the local market, got his start in the auto industry with Josh Darden.
The car dealer who went on to become one of the region's most beloved philanthropists, cofounding the CIVIC Leadership Institute and the ACCESS College Foundation, died Jan. 22 in the hospital, days after having partial hip replacement surgery. He was 77.
